The School of Continuing Studies has been awarded $1 million to endow need-based scholarships by the Bernard Osher Foundation of San Francisco. The scholarships will be available to Richmond-area students returning to college. The Osher Foundation has also provided a $50,000 grant to begin funding scholarships for the current fall term. The endowment will begin funding scholarships in the 2009-2010 academic year. Dr. Roberts Featured in RichmondNow
August 26, 2008Dr. Daniel Roberts, chair of the liberal arts program, is featured in a September 2008 RichmondNow article titled “Listeners Pause Daily for a Moment in Time”. The article traces the history of “A Moment in Time” through Roberts’ academic career through his teaching at the University to the development of the “A Moment in Time” series at WCVE for National Public Radio. Dr. Roberts Named Distinguished Educator
August 19, 2008Dr. Daniel M. Roberts, associate professor of Liberal Arts, chair of the Liberal Arts program and executive producer and host of “A Moment in Time“, has been named one of the University’s Distinguished Educators for 2008. He is to be recognized during the Faculty Colloquy on Wednesday, August 20, 2008. The award is accompanied by a cash stipend to be used for faculty scholarly endeavors. Dr. Roberts joins other SCS faculty who have received this recognition: Dr. Richard Leatherman (1999-2000), Dr. Walter Green (2004-2005) and Prof. Porcher Taylor (2005-2006).

New Search Interface for UR Library Catalog
August 18, 2008Starting today, a new search interface has debuted for the UR Library Catalog. In addition to the updated search screen, printing and emailing information about library materials is much easier and users will be able to filter results as they explore a topic. Links to book summaries, reviews and cover images are also available. The catalog interface works in all Internet browsers, but Firefox is recommended. Center for Culinary Arts Opens August 22
August 12, 2008The University of Richmond’s Center for Culinary Arts will open August 22, 2008. The Center provides an interesting space to hold group culinary events, like hands-on and demonstration-style cooking classes for corporate clients and private groups, and the Center will also host individual cooking classes through the School’s Culinary Arts Program. The Center has over two thousand square feet, can accommodate parties of 20 for hands-on events and 40 for demonstration-style events, and is conveniently located in the Gayton Crossing Shopping Center at 9722 Gayton Crossing Road. SCS Study Abroad Course Wins Quest Grant
August 12, 2008Dr. Patricia Strait, chair of the Human Resource Management program, has been awarded a Richmond Quest grant to support the development of HRM 398U: Human Resource Management in Latin America. The course will be offered in Spring 2009 as part of the School’s inaugural Spring Break Study Abroad program.

Professor Dies After Struggle with Cancer
August 4, 2008With sadness the School of Continuing Studies announces the passing of Robert C. Freundt, adjunct professor emeritus, on Friday evening, August 1, after a long struggle with cancer. Freundt served the School since 1990 as professor in the area of liberal arts and consultant on a number of special projects. Visitation with the family takes place Monday, August 4, from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad Street, with a funeral mass on August 5 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Road.
