Professor Judges and Discusses Poetry

April 2, 2009

Professor Ron Smith, adjunct assistant professor and freelance writer, has recently been involved in both judging poetry and leading a poetry workshop. In the April 2009 issue of Richmond magaine, Smith and his fellow judges are featured in the cover article announcing the first James River Writers/Richmond Magazine Poetry Contest. And in March, Smith conducted a workshop at Chesterfield County’s Main Library titled “Poetry in the 21st Century: What Poets Today Need to Read and Write.”

ESM Research Paper Competition Initiated

April 2, 2009

For the first time, in collaboration with Carrie Ludovico, our SCS Instruction Librarian, we have secured funding for an Emergency Services Management Student Research Paper Competition. The competition will be for papers written for courses in one of the ESM degree programs during calendar year 2008.

Papers must be nominated by an ESM faculty member and eligible for submission to one of the department’s on-line journals for publication. A nomination form will be placed on line shortly. Papers will be judged by a four person committee and the writers of the two best papers will receive cash awards of $300 for the best paper and $150 for the “runner up.”  Both graduate and undergraduate papers will be considered.

Until more detailed instructions are available, both students and faculty are encouraged to identify papers that are worthy of submission. This year, we are working with a compressed time line, so we anticipate that the deadline for submission of papers will be during the first week in April. Papers will be judged using the following criteria:

1.) Thesis makes a significant contribution to the field of Disaster Science/Emergency Services Management.
2.) Thesis represents superior academic work.
3.) Thesis makes excellent use of research in the field to support argument and issues represented.
4.) Thesis has been published, or been accepted for publication, in a reputable academic journal, or is appropriate for publication in one of the department’s online publications.

Contact Dr. Bo Harris (wharris3@richmond.edu) or Carrie Ludovico (cludovic@richmond.edu) for more information. Faculty members may nominate papers using the form available at esmresearch.org.
