Leadership in Education Director to Discuss Race

Dr. Thomas J. Shields, director of the Center for Leadership in Education (a collaborative effort of the School of Continuing Studies and the Jepson School of Leadership Studies) will participate in a panel discussion titled “A Conversation about Race and Politics” on July 19, 2008. Philanthropy Director Elected to VAFRE Board

Kathy Powers, director of the School of Continuing Studies Institute on Philanthropy, has been elected to the board of directors of the Virginia Association of Fund Raising Executives (VAFRE). Dean Brown Honored by Michigan 4-H

Dr. Patricia Johnson Brown, Senior Associate Dean for Academic Programs, will be inducted as a member of the 2008 class of the Michigan 4-H Emerald Clover Society on June 19, 2008. The society recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of Michigan 4-H alumni. As a nominee, Dean Brown has been selected to receive this honor based on Michigan 4-H youth membership, professional and business achievement, leadership in community service and philanthropy, contributions to or impact on American society and her significant leadership and achievement as a 4-H member.

Staff Members Receive Service Awards

At the University of Richmond Service Awards celebration on March 27, three School of Continuing Studies staff members were recognized for their service to the School and the University. Denard Hall, Operations Coordinator and Kay Robertson, Administrative Assistant to the Deans each received 5-Year Service Awards, while Mary Ewing, Administrative Assistant to the Teacher Licensure Program received the 10-Year Service Award.

SCS Faculty and Staff to Present in Philly

March 21, 2008

Professor Dan Roberts, Program Chair of Liberal Arts; Associate Dean Ned Swartz; Director Janet Laughlin of the Danville Community College Student Success Center; and Site Coordinator Stephanie Ferrugia of the Danville Community College Weekend College program, will make a presentation titled “Opportunity for Success: The Ultimate Public/Private Partnership” at the 88th Annual Convention of the American Association for Community Colleges in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Deans Narduzzi and Kitchen Promoted

Dean James Narduzzi and Associate Dean David Kitchen both received academic promotions recently. Narduzzi was promoted to full professor, while Kitchen was promoted to associate professor.

Since Deans Narduzzi and Kitchen carry academic titles (faculty rank) in addition to their administrative titles, they are eligible for promotion within faculty promotion guidelines. Dean Narduzzi is the first full-time School of Continuing Studies employee to earn the academic rank of full professor.

Dean Kitchen Featured in RichmondNow

David Kitchen, Associate Dean for Strategic Planning and Director of Summer Programs, is included with his wife, Michele Cox, in an article about faculty and staff couples who work at the University. The article, titled “Faculty, Staff Couples Find Mostly Advantages to Campus Jobs,” appears in the March issue of RichmondNow.

Celebrate Dr. King’s Legacy

The campus community is invited to participate in a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 21, in Cannon Memorial Chapel. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. The full program will last until approximately 3:15 p.m.

The keynote address will be delivered by Mr. Victor Lewis, Director of the Center for Diversity Leadership and an internationally-recognized leader in the field of anti-oppression diversity work and alliance-building. Lewis is best known for his inspiring and catalytic leadership role in “The Color of Fear,” a powerful film about racism. A reception will follow in the Gottwald Atrium.

Dean Narduzzi Publishes Article

Dr. James L. Narduzzi, Dean of the School of Continuing Studies, recently had an article published in the Fall 2007 issue of Continuing Higher Education Review. The article is titled “Fear and Loathing on the (Capital) Campaign Trail.”

Advisor Willis Receives Promotion

Lois Willis, Off-Campus Programs Coordinator and Student Advisor, received a promotion to Student Advisor - Graduate Programs. She will continue to coordinate all off-campus programs in addition to providing advising services to students in our graduate degree offerings.
